1908: Maxim Silencer
The first industrial silencer was patented in 1908 by Hiram Percy Maxim — son of the inventor of the Maxim machine gun. The design is simple: a cylinder containing a series of inclined baffles, with gas slowed in the chambers between them.
Maxim sold the device to hunters and sportsmen as the Maxim Silencer. Magazine ads of the era showed a hunter not spooking ducks on his second shot.
The principle Maxim laid down — expansion chambers with baffles — is the foundation of every modern MBC and silencer. Over 120 years materials, chamber geometry, and computation methods changed — but the physics did not.
1920–1940: military adaptation
After the First World War it became clear: a silencer is a stealth tool for reconnaissance and sabotage, not a hunting accessory.
In 1942 the British produced the De Lisle carbine — a bolt-action in .45 ACP with a silencer integrated over the full barrel length. Sound at the shooter: about 85 dB, quieter than a period air rifle.
The USSR developed the «Bramit» device (1929–1940) in parallel — an attachment for the Nagant revolver and Mosin rifle. Used by the NKVD and Red Army special detachments.
The era's material was carbon steel. Service life was 200–500 rounds before full baffle degradation. Chamber replacement was a mandatory procedure after each operation.
1950–1980: legalisation and sport
After 1934 in the US (National Firearms Act) silencers required registration and a tax stamp — but were not banned. In Finland, Norway, New Zealand, silencers were sold freely to hunters as hearing protection.
This period saw aluminium housings for mass reduction. A compromise: an aluminium silencer is lighter, but lifespan drops to 1,000–2,000 rounds due to chamber erosion.
In the USSR there was no civilian silencer market. A separate class emerged — open-port muzzle brakes (compensators) — devices with side ports that reduced recoil but not sound. These were legal for hunting and sporting firearms.
1990–2010: birth of the closed-type MBC
In the post-Soviet space, at the intersection of two traditions — open-port brakes and silencer-style expansion chambers — the closed-type MBC was born.
The closed-type MBC formally remains a compensator: it does not silence the shot to inaudibility, requires no licence, and is legal for civilian ownership. But its expansion chambers simultaneously cut recoil and drop sound markedly: in our .308 test series of July 2026 the line-up delivered 28.9 to 35.0 dB of reduction.
Manufacturers experimented with materials:
- Aluminium alloys — light, but 2,000–3,000-round lifespan
- Stainless steel — long lifespan, but mass up to 250 g
- Titanium alloys (Ti-6Al-4V) — balanced compromise across all parameters
By 2015, titanium became the material of choice in the premium segment.
2017: Titanium Technology and additive manufacturing
In 2017 Titanium Technology launched serial production of MBCs from Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5. Part of the lineup is machined classically; part is produced by selective laser melting (SLM).
3D-printing enables chamber geometries that cannot be machined: internal spirals, variable cross-section, baffles of varying thickness. This raises sound suppression by another 15–20% at the same mass.

What remains from Maxim
In 1908 Hiram Percy Maxim patented a principle that operates in every modern silencer and MBC:
«Gases must be stopped, cooled, and released to atmosphere more slowly than in free flight.»
Over 120 years almost everything else has changed:
- Cast iron → stainless steel → Ti-6Al-4V titanium
- Manual lathe → CNC milling → 3D printing
- Empirical tuning → CFD → CAD optimisation
- 500-round lifespan → 10,000-round lifespan
But the physics — expansion, slowing, turbulence — is unchanged.
Bottom line
Silencers and MBCs are not «new gadgets» or «military fashion». They are an engineering tradition a century long, solving the same problem: managing the gas dynamics of a shot to reduce sound and recoil.
A modern titanium MBC is the lawful heir to Maxim's 1908 patent, rewritten in the language of the 21st century.
