Two classes of device
«Muzzle brake» and «MBC» are often used interchangeably, but they are different classes of devices with different working physics.
Open-port muzzle brake — a compensator with side ports that vent propellant gases laterally and rearward immediately after the bullet passes. The gas creates a forward reaction force, subtracted from the recoil impulse.
Closed-type MBC — a device with internal expansion chambers. The bullet passes through a series of baffles; gases enter the chambers, expand, slow, and exit through the muzzle hole at reduced pressure and temperature.
Both reduce recoil, but they do so differently and with different side effects.
How an open muzzle brake works
The principle is Newton's third law. Gases vent sideways and rearward at 800–1,200 m/s. Reaction from each port points forward and slightly upward (when ports are angled). The combined vector partially cancels recoil and pushes the muzzle down — compensating muzzle rise.
Strengths:
- Effective recoil reduction (30–50% on large calibres)
- Active suppression of muzzle rise
- Simple construction, low mass
Weaknesses:
- High sound level for the shooter and adjacent firing positions
- Visible muzzle flash
- Lateral blast wave (felt at 3–5 m)
How a closed-type MBC works
Gases are trapped inside expansion chambers. Chamber volume is 5–10× the bore volume, so pressure drops adiabatically. By the time the gases exit the muzzle, they are cooled and slowed — sound is softened, flash is masked.
Recoil reduction here is a side effect of gas dwell in the chambers: impulse spreads over time, and peak pressure on the shooter's shoulder decreases.
Strengths:
- Sound reduction: in our .308 test series (July 2026) the line-up delivered 28.9–35.0 dB depending on the model
- Suppression of muzzle flash
- Recoil reduction 40–80% (depending on chamber count and calibre)
- Minimal lateral blast
Weaknesses:
- Higher mass than an open brake
- Longer profile
What our measurements show
In July 2026 we measured a series of closed-type devices on one rifle: .308 Win, a Tikka with a 20-inch barrel, Barnaul FMJ ammunition, an Ekofizika-110A sound level meter, microphone one metre to the left of the shooter, average of five shots. The bare-muzzle baseline was around 170 dB; our models delivered 28.9–35.0 dB of reduction. Per-model figures are on each product page, the full report is at titan-dtk.ru/testzvuka.
That series contained no direct «open brake vs closed device» comparison — we did not measure open brakes, so we quote no numbers for them. The qualitative difference is clear without a measurement: an open brake vents gas sideways and the shot stays loud for the shooter and the neighbours on the line, while a closed device first traps the gas in its chambers and therefore works on both recoil and sound.

Bottom line
Open brakes and closed-type MBCs solve overlapping but distinct problems. The open brake works harder on muzzle rise and is lighter. The closed-type MBC reduces recoil and sound simultaneously, at the cost of greater mass and more complex construction.
Since 2017 Titanium Technology has specialised in closed-type MBCs from Ti-6Al-4V — this device class makes the fullest use of the alloy's properties.
